Learn How to Draw Baloo From The Jungle Book With Disney Animation

May 5, 2020
May 5, 2020

Looking to spice up your at-home doodling? Learn how to draw the most lovable bear in the jungle, Baloo! Eric Goldberg, animator and director at Walt Disney Animation Studios, teaches this video tutorial on how to draw Baloo from The Jungle Book. Eric has worked on so many of our favorite Walt Disney Animation Studios films, including Hercules, The Princess and the Frog, and Moana. He also directed Pocahontas as well as two sequences for Fantasia 2000 — and he even animated the Genie in Aladdin! Draw along with Eric as he shares his tips and tricks for sketching, as Eric says, “my good friend and hopefully yours, Baloo the bear”!

Eric notes that most Disney characters’ heads begin with a circle or sphere. When researching how Baloo was originally drawn in the 1967 film, Eric found that the animators started with rounded shapes that make drawing Baloo a lot easier, before squaring off some of those shapes in the next stage.

Throughout the video, Eric shares universal drawing advice, such as starting off by drawing lightly, then beginning to use darker lines in what’s called the “tie-down” stage. Think of everything in the drawing as three-dimensional. And don’t be afraid to use your eraser if you want to edit your drawing — that’s what they’re for!

How did your drawing turn out? Share your work on social media with the hashtag #DrawWithDisneyAnimation!
