The Simpsons has a playdate with Disney+! Starting tomorrow, April 10, the animated short film “Maggie Simpson in ‘Playdate with Destiny’” will stream globally on Disney+.
The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, along with James L. Brooks, Al Jean, Matt Selman, David Silverman, and "a buncha hardworking animators" shared the exciting news with fans around the world on social media in the form of a special handwritten note.
In it, Groening says, “Earlier this year we made a nifty short film called ‘Playdate With Destiny.’ The response was so gratifying we wanted everyone to see it at home.”
Here’s what we learned from the recent Disney+ press release:
The film begins on a day that seems like just another day at the park for Maggie Simpson. But when Maggie faces playground peril, a heroic young baby whisks her from danger — and steals her heart. After a blissful first playdate, Maggie can’t wait to see her new baby beau again the following day, but things don’t go exactly as planned. Will fate (or Homer) get in her way?
In a recent interview, “Playdate with Destiny” director and producer for The Simpsons, David Silverman described the short as hilarious and sweet, saying, “We had a lot of fun animating the montage stuff, where you see Hudson and Maggie in one scenario, but then the reality in another scenario.”
Silverman explained that Maggie is a fun character to center the short around because she’s quiet. “There’s a silent aspect to it,” he said.
The short was originally released in theatres before Disney and Pixar’s Onward, and joins The Simpsons Movie and 30 seasons of the Emmy Award-winning television series, now streaming on Disney+.
