First there was Tom Hanks, then came Tim Allen — now, we have Tony Hale as Forky! For decades, actors have been working diligently to inhabit their roles off-screen in order to inform their performance on-screen. In preparation for the character of Forky in Toy Story 4 and Forky Asks a Question, Tony Hale took his method to a whole new level.

Forky, a toy created from trash, seems simple on the surface, but soon finds himself in the midst of an existential crisis, torn between feeling like he belongs in a waste bin and needing to fulfill his new purpose of comforting his creator, Bonnie.

In this thought-provoking video that mixes storytelling and animation, Tony Hale discloses the depths he went to in order to connect with his character, the lovable spork. Beware! Things might get a bit stinky!

Untold with Tony Hale | Disney

After watching this video, there is no doubt Tony is fully dedicated to creating an authentic character.

I was told that Forky was made of trash and I really wanted to feel his world,” he shares, “so I just told my family, I said ‘I'm going to camp out in a dumpster. Don’t look for me.’

Adding animation to Tony’s tale of diving into a dumpster in order to unite with Forky’s fellow pieces of trash helps us feel like we’re right there with him, banana peels and all. The video’s producer, Ezra Edmond, describes how animation complements Tony’s story:

While we're able to utilize animation to enhance meaningful moments and add humor, we can also bring stories to life that may have no photograph or video history.

This is absolutely one of those stories we never want to forget!

Be sure to catch Tony Hale’s landmark performance as Forky in Toy Story 4 and Forky Asks a Question, now streaming on Disney+!
