Pixar movies are iconic for their use of 3D animation, but what would a classic Pixar movie look like if imagined in a totally different way? A new digital video called “Pixar Remix” explores just that! The experiment? Create a remix of WALL•E in a 16-bit style of animation!
This style of animation, almost reminiscent of an old-school video game, lent a fun twist to the classic story. Senior Producer Ryan Burns ended up producing this video using a mixture of 16-bit and 32-bit animation, but he made sure to highlight some iconic elements of 16-bit, like the classic side-scrolling elements from the Genesis/SNES era. He was especially excited to take on this particular film, saying, “WALL•E is such a showcase of Disney and Pixar core animation principles, and it’s truly jaw-dropping how much emotion they get out [of] a ridged and boxy metal robot.”
If you’re a fan of WALL•E or just love a good throwback vibe, this video might be the cutest thing you’ll watch all day! And it was even more fun for the team who brought it to life. "Getting to reimagine WALL•E in a different animation medium was such a treat, and it only goes to show how strong the original story is," shared Dave Levy, Director of Animation for the digital marketing team that works on Pixar’s social media.
The video touches on some fan favorite moments from WALL•E like his cockroach pal Hal, the discovery of the plant, and the iconic dance with EVE in space! But how does one even pick a favorite moment to showcase in a piece like this? Burns shared, “Those sentimental moments of Wall•E longing for contact after being alone for so long and then finding companionship in EVE were the moments that had me swooning when the animators showed me the cuts. Also, getting to play with the ‘game physics’ of a fire extinguisher in space was fun as well!”
So, take a trip to outer space and enjoy this Pixar Remix!
