Great news for all the fans of spooky, scary fun out there! Disney+ has announced that they’re teaming up with 20th Century Fox Television to adapt Goosebumps author R.L. Stine’s BOOM! Studios graphic novel series, Just Beyond. The show is created by Seth Grahame-Smith, who brought you the delightful novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (which was turned into a movie in 2016, produced by Natalie Portman and starring Lily James) and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (whose 2012 film adaptation was written by Grahame-Smith, produced by Tim Burton, and starring Benjamin Walker). He also wrote the screenplays for Tim Burton's Dark Shadows, The Lego Batman Movie, and The Saint, so you know he’s a master of that eerie-funny combo.
The graphic novels are a four-volume middle-grade series that R.L. Stine published with BOOM! Studios, with art by Kelly and Nicole Matthews, that explore the horrors — real and imagined — of middle school.
Disney+’s Just Beyond will be an eight-episode horror-comedy anthology adaptation of these spooky tales. Says Grahame-Smith of the upcoming series: "I grew up watching Twilight Zone reruns and the original Amazing Stories with my parents. I've always wanted to make a genre anthology series that families could enjoy together, and do it in a way that delivered for kids and adults alike.”
Meanwhile, author R.L Stine is excited to be working with Disney again. Yes, again! “Back in the day, we had a Goosebumps HorrorLand attraction at Walt Disney World,” said Stine. “It was one of the thrills of my life.”
Overall, the show is a match made in heaven. “R.L. Stine has been a part of millions of childhoods, and Disney+ has already proven itself as a place that knows how to make high-quality shows for the whole family. I couldn't be more excited to be working with both of them," said Grahame-Smith.
Things are moving quickly: A writers room is currently being put together, and Just Beyond is expected to arrive on Disney+ in the fall of 2021. The result is sure to be just beyond our expectations!
