Here are six fun facts to enjoy while waiting for Captain Marvel!
We’ve finally entered 2019, which means Marvel Studios' Captain Marvel is only a short two months away — and we can’t contain our eagerness to see the film! Last month, we shared some insider knowledge of things we learned about the upcoming film during a set visit with Brie Larson. Well, get excited because we’re here to now reveal facts we learned exclusively from Larson and more of the legendary cast of Captain Marvel — including Lashana Lynch, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ben Mendelsohn! Here are six fun facts to enjoy while waiting for March to come along:
1. Lashana Lynch got to spend time with real Air Force pilots.
Friend to Carol Danvers, Maria Rambeau is a pilot in Captain Marvel — so it made sense for Lynch to get an understanding of an Air Force pilot’s life to prepare for her role as Rambeau. She had the amazing opportunity to spend a couple of days with real life Air Force pilots known as Taboo and Mother, and immerse herself in their day-to-day.
Lynch recounted her experience with Taboo and Mother: “I went to Luke Air Force Base in Phoenix and spent the Monday with Taboo and the Tuesday with Mother. Both of them have husbands, and children, and a household, and they’re both commanders of a squadron. One of whom has a husband who is also a commander ... It’s crazy. They’re at work being absolutely amazing, and then they go home, quickly fix dinner, talk to the nanny, take out the washing, [and] get dressed [for dinner] … I was like, ‘But how do you even do that?' That’s already being a superwoman in some right, in my opinion.”
This is proof that not all heroes wear capes.
2. Maria Rambeau helps Captain Marvel remember her past.
When we are first introduced to Captain Marvel, she is struggling with recalling memories from her past. However, something reignites within her when Rambeau comes back into the picture.
Lynch explained the special dynamic between the two and the impact it makes: “There’s a certain energy that you share with your friends that you can’t get anywhere else. And [Captain Marvel] has these flashes of the feeling. It’s only [through] conversations and through [Rambeau] giving her some history about herself … [that] it all comes flashing back and [she] can be herself.” That’s some major #BFFGoals!
3. We’ll learn more about Nick Fury’s backstory.
Not only do we get to learn more about the star of the film, Carol Danvers, but we will also gain more insight into some additional characters — one of which is the iconic Nick Fury.Samuel L. Jackson revealed hints of what we can expect to uncover from Nick Fury in Captain Marvel, including “the origin of what happened to his eye, possibly.” Jackson continued: “You'll find out that he does have family that's referenced. There's backstory [that] we haven't talked about before ... where he's from [and] what he's done. There are times when he actually humanly reacts to things with fear and awe ... before he learns to control his emotions in another way. We talk about him being in a war, leaving the war, [and] being a spy. So we get more of what kind of turns him into this person that you originally meet in Iron Man.”
Anyone else squealing with excitement while reading this?
4. Samuel L. Jackson thinks Captain Marvel was the right character to headline her own movie.
With so many characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there is a wide range of superheroes who could be selected to have their own dedicated film. However, in Jackson’s eyes, Captain Marvel was the perfect choice. He elaborates on his thoughts: “She’s pretty much the strongest character in terms of someone with powers ... so for Carol Danvers to be that person, and for Brie to become that person, it’s [going to] be a dynamite thing. They’re up against some really, really tough odds right now, [as] we saw throughout Infinity War. So now we know we need something that’s as powerful as Thanos, and at some point, we’ll find out how powerful she is and all the things that she’s capable of.” Whoa. Doesn’t she just sound incredible?Additionally, Jackson revealed, “She’s one of the few people in the [Marvel Cinematic Universe who] can time travel.” And not going to lie, we’re pretty jealous of that power!
5. The Skrulls have some humanity in them.
Although Skrulls may be villains in this universe, it doesn’t mean that they don’t have an emotional factor to them. Just like humans, things like homes and children are important aspects of their lives. Ben Mendelsohn plays the role of a Skrull named Talo, and explains that there will be moments that will allow viewers to feel empathy for Skrulls like him: “They behave very differently towards their own than [how] they do towards what you might call the good guys in this [film]. They've got a sense of family and community and stuff like that, but they're out to do what they got to do.” Mental note to self: keep this in mind when watching the Skrulls in Captain Marvel.
6. The meaningful themes that many Marvel Studios’ films have is what attracted Brie Larson to this role.
Captain Marvel encompassed everything that Larson wanted in a movie. Films from Marvel Studios are no stranger to incorporating important messages, which is exactly why she was drawn to Carol Danvers: “I’ve noticed that Marvel movies in particular have so much meaning in them. You can have a great time and just enjoy [them] for having a great time, but you can also be left with some really deep philosophical questions. That combo is really powerful. So the idea that we could make something that was thought-provoking and entertaining [and] that was gonna be seen all over the world is a crazy one to have to think about, and think about your participation in, and think about what that will do to your life, and to your family and to your friends.” We couldn’t agree more!
